  • Thanks to the sangha for helping to paint!

    Published January 3rd, 2010

book class 013We want to thank all of you who came over the last two weekends to help paint the new Brooklyn Zen Center space at 505 Carroll Street. Many of the sangha (some featured to the left at a lunch meeting) came and we accomplished an enormous amount of work. Working together was very encouraging, moving and a lot of fun. It is impressive to witness again and again what can be realized when working wholeheartedly together.

That said, there will be a lot more to do as we move into the space over the month of January and prepare for the practice intensive with Teah in February. In addition to adding the finishing touches to the paint job, we will be assembling the kitchen that arrives in the next week or so, sanding and finishing up doors and trim, and probably putting together a few bookshelves, cabinets and tables here and there. So we will keep you informed about other work times coming up in case you are interested in joining.

But for now, please rest and enjoy some of the photos from the two weekends on our facebook page. Feel free to email any other photos you may have from the work weekends and we can add those as well.

Oh, you may notice that some of the photos show sangha members painting white letters across the floor. With a very enthusiastic and joyful spirit, we decided to paint the Heart Sutra in english very largely across the plywood subfloor. The hardwood floor will be built this week, enclosing the sutra beneath it. So we can move into the space knowing that from beneath our zendo floor quietly radiates the message of the heart sutra zazen period after zazen period.

Thank you again for all of your hard work. A happy and healthy new year to all!
