Walk for a Nuclear-Free Future on May 2nd
Published April 22nd, 2010
The Buddhist Peace Fellowship has invited interested members of our community to join them in walking in support of a nuclear-free future. The walk will end at the United Nations in conjunction with the five year review of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty.
Amy Hutto and Mitch Major will be coordinating those from our sangha who wish to walk. You can email Mitch at mitchmajor [at] earthlink [dot] net if you want to walk on Saturday and Amy at helloamyhutto [at] att [dot] net if you want to walk and attend the rally at the UN on Sunday.
Invitation from the Buddhist Peace Fellowship:
We invite you to walk on Sunday, May 2 under the banner of Buddhist Peace Fellowship along with thousands from around the world for an international day of action calling attention to nuclear non-proliferation.
This walk happens as representatives of the world’s nations gather at the United Nations for the five year Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) review. This treaty’s objective is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and to further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament. 190 parties have joined including the five nuclear-weapon-producing countries (US, UK, Russia, France, and China). The treaty has been reviewed at the U.N. every five years and the next review is scheduled to begin May 3.
We support this effort with safety, understanding, and trust as shared concerns.
We plan to walk mindfully while maintaining inner silence, which invites spontaneous expression of “being peace.” We also plan to meet up with participants in the 700-mile “Walk for a Nuclear-Free Future,” sponsored by the Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist Order, affiliated with Grafton Peace Pagoda in upstate NY.
We will send more specific information with the meetup time and place during the next week and post it on our website. Please stay tuned to: www.bpfny.org
Please feel free to visit the following site, which includes many details including a petition to sign in support of the NPT:
