Catherine is a Soto Zen priest in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi. She was ordained by Tenshin Reb Anderson Roshi in 2005, and received precepts as a layperson in 1998 from Rev. Shohaku Okumura. She has been in residential training at San Francisco Zen Center since 2000 and served as Shuso, or head monk, for the Spring 2010 practice period at Green Dragon Temple/Green Gulch Farm.

Before entering residential training, Catherine wrote fiction and taught creative writing in the Master of Fine Arts program of the University of Pittsburgh. Her novel Isabel Out of the Rain was published in 1991 by Mercury House, and her shorter fiction appeared in many literary journals between 1977 and 2000. In January 2011 she will return to Pitt for a term as visiting professor in the MFA program.

Here is Catherine’s description of the retreat:

Susan Sontag used the phrase “writing as a wisdom project” when commenting on one writer’s approach to autobiography as an occasion for deep self-study. In this retreat we expand on this idea to bring self-study to our practice of imaginative writing, with an emphasis on fiction and poetry. From the position of understanding our practice as writers as an opportunity to receive, imagine, study and reveal our own present, dependently arising body and mind, we write and listen together, using prompts as well as free writing, and reading and responding to one another’s words. Our work is quite intimate and offers everyone opportunities for participation and discussion. Considerations of form, both in literary practice and in dharma practice, play a part in our discussions. The day is structured to include informal periods of reflection and formal periods of silent meditation as practiced in the Zen tradition. Meditation instruction will be offered as needed.

The workshop is appropriate for anyone interested in the practice of writing and self-study: experienced writers and beginners, experienced Zen practitioners and beginners.

The day will go from 9am to 5pm and there will be a break for lunch. (Participants may bring a bag lunch to eat at the Zen Center.) The cost of the workshop is $60. Please send in your payment by September 15th to reserve a space. Checks can be made out to Brooklyn Zen Center and dropped off at the center or mailed to:

Brooklyn Zen Center
505 Carroll Street, Suite 2A
Brooklyn, NY 11215

If you’d like to sign up or if you have any questions, please use the contact form found here.

Thank you very much.

Please note that all groups have limited enrollment and are filling up quickly.

Laura O’Loughlin will be leading a study group on the precepts on Saturdays from 1:30pm to 2:45pm. Greg Snyder will be leading a study group on The Four Noble Truths on Wednesdays from 8:00pm to 9:15pm. Ian Case will be leading a study group on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness on Thursday evenings from 8:00pm to 9:15pm.

In an effort to support continuity in study together, some classes are not drop-in and participants are expected to attend regularly as well as begin and end together. Also it is strongly encouraged to sit at least twice per week with the sangha at Brooklyn Zen Center if attending any of the groups. This is to ground our study in practice, rather than engage in scholarly explorations only.

For more information on any of these study groups please visit our classes pages here. If you want to sign up for a study group, please do so soon by emailing the study group leader or by using the online contact form here.

We are immensely grateful to Teah Strozer for finding the han for us and to Maria Wallace for schlepping it across the country in her luggage. This is not a light chunk of wood!

After Teah finished writing the words onto the face, the han was hung from the pillar next to the densho bell – a seemingly appropriate act on the final night before she returns to San Francisco. Once again in our midst it reminds us both to be in the zendo by the second roll down and not to waste this life!

Several sangha members have asked about aspects of Brooklyn Zen Center governance and if we might be able to post a web page with this information so members can understand where to take questions and concerns. In response to this we now have a BZC governance page that lists our board members and various committees. The page is very simple, currently only listing board members, committees, and a link to our mission and vision. We hope that there is enough information in the current version so that Brooklyn Zen Center members have some idea who to contact regarding any issues they would like to discuss. A link to this page is listed on the right side column throughout our site. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have regarding Brooklyn Zen Center. To the sangha members who made this suggestion, thank you!

The amount of work the JMP participants put into playing together since last summer was stunningly clear last Friday night. The entire line up of standards were gorgeously played. The elegance and attention throughout the two-person improvisations still linger in the memory and the heart-thumping blast out of the final Coltrane piece was a thrilling finale to a successful year of playing.

A deep bow to the students who navigated many challenges and very busy school schedules to keep their commitments to one another and accomplish a remarkable group and performance. A deep bow to jazz bassist, composer, educator and sangha member, Adam Bernstein, for his unwavering effort and commitment to JMP students and to bringing mindfulness and meditation to the world through music. Bravo!

We are all looking forward to next year!
