The Northern Manhattan Sangha was formed to support those in upper Manhattan who wish to practice in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi and attend events and retreats with visiting BZC teachers, but live too far to come on a daily basis to Brooklyn. If you are interested in joining this vibrant community for regular sitting, please contact Paul Brantley by emailing pbrantley (at) mac (dot) com.

The amount of work the JMP participants put into playing together since last summer was stunningly clear last Friday night. The entire line up of standards were gorgeously played. The elegance and attention throughout the two-person improvisations still linger in the memory and the heart-thumping blast out of the final Coltrane piece was a thrilling finale to a successful year of playing.

A deep bow to the students who navigated many challenges and very busy school schedules to keep their commitments to one another and accomplish a remarkable group and performance. A deep bow to jazz bassist, composer, educator and sangha member, Adam Bernstein, for his unwavering effort and commitment to JMP students and to bringing mindfulness and meditation to the world through music. Bravo!

We are all looking forward to next year!

The walk will end at the United Nations in conjunction with the five year review of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty.

Amy Hutto and Mitch Major will be coordinating those from our sangha who wish to walk. You can email Mitch at mitchmajor [at] earthlink [dot] net if you want to walk on Saturday and Amy at helloamyhutto [at] att [dot] net if you want to walk and attend the rally at the UN on Sunday.

Invitation from the Buddhist Peace Fellowship:

We invite you to walk on Sunday, May 2 under the banner of Buddhist Peace Fellowship along with thousands from around the world for an international day of action calling attention to nuclear non-proliferation.

This walk happens as representatives of the world’s nations gather at the United Nations for the five year Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) review. This treaty’s objective is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and to further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament. 190 parties have joined including the five nuclear-weapon-producing countries (US, UK, Russia, France, and China). The treaty has been reviewed at the U.N. every five years and the next review is scheduled to begin May 3.

We support this effort with safety, understanding, and trust as shared concerns.

We plan to walk mindfully while maintaining inner silence, which invites spontaneous expression of “being peace.” We also plan to meet up with participants in the 700-mile “Walk for a Nuclear-Free Future,” sponsored by the Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist Order, affiliated with Grafton Peace Pagoda in upstate NY.

We will send more specific information with the meetup time and place during the next week and post it on our website. Please stay tuned to: www.bpfny.org

Please feel free to visit the following site, which includes many details including a petition to sign in support of the NPT:

http://peaceandjusticenow.org/wordpress

General Schedule:

1:30 Assemble at 7th Ave. south of 41st Street (more specific meetup info to come)

2:00 – 3:00 Rally

3:00 – 3:30 Walk to the United Nations Dag Hammarskjold Plaza

4:00 – 6:00 International Peace and Music Festival in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza

We look forward to walking with you in the streets of New York City on Sunday, May 2, as the world considers this important matter, which impacts us all.

As Earth Day approaches, thanks for continuing to walk this mindful way.

in peace,
Books will be available for sale and signing at the event.

If you will be coming to the event, please RSVP by clicking here. Thank you.

About the author:

Founding editor of Five Fingers Review, John High is the author of nine books, including his award-winning (Village Voice Literary Supplement top 25 books of the year) trilogy of poetic novels, The Desire Notebooks, The Lives of Thomas, The Sasha Poems, Bloodline: Selected Writings, a book-length poem Here, and his recently published novel, Talking God’s Radio Show.

John is one of his generation’s foremost translators of contemporary Russian poetry. The principal editor of Crossing Centuries: The New Generation in Russian Poetry, he is known for his translations of Nina Iskrenko, Ivan Zhdanov, and Alexei Parschikov, among others.

He has received four Fulbrights, two NEAs, and writing awards from the Witter Bynner Foundation, Arts International, and the Academy of American Poets, among others. He has taught Creative Writing at San Francisco State University, Moscow State University, Montclair University, and currently teaches Creative Writing and literature at Long Island University. John currently lives in Brooklyn with his wife and daughter.

Criticism for The Book of Unknowing:

“Imagine a novel whose setting is dark and indeterminate, whose nameless characters are shadowy, and whose circular plot unfolds timelessly—and you will be imagining John High’s A Book of Unknow- ing. These powerful poems, whose language rushes past in a torrent of disorienting yet evocative images and sounds, will pull you out of this world and into another, that matters a great deal more, where all that you think you know becomes doubtful.” ——Norman Fischer

“John High’s poems, threaded together by narratives of childhood that span a century, are always immediate, grounded, and as fleeting as the moment. Throughout, High’s ear stays close to the heart. The music is visible.” —Matvei Yankelevich

Those of us from Brooklyn Zen Center who participated were discussing how happy we were to have been able to meet and work with those from other sanghas in the city. Many exciting and fruitful conversations and relationships were begun that we are very much looking forward to continuing.

We want to thank the Buddhist Council for organizing this year’s Buddhist Forum on Sustainable Sangha and the environment and allowing Brooklyn Zen Center to host it. We look forward to deepening our relationship with those members of other New York sanghas that we were so fortunate to meet. May we all grow together in the dharma.
