Due to a change in circumstances, the group is currently taking a break from sitting together as they look for a new meeting space and time. Updates will come with changes to their status.

The Northern Manhattan Sangha was formed to support those in upper Manhattan who wish to practice in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi and attend events and retreats with visiting BZC teachers, but live too far to come on a daily basis to Brooklyn. If you are interested in joining this vibrant community for regular sitting, please contact Paul Brantley by emailing pbrantley (at) mac (dot) com.

We are very excited as the new Morningside Heights-based sitting group will support those who wish to practice in our lineage and attend events and retreats with visiting teachers, but live too far to come on a daily basis to Brooklyn.

Though we do not have all of the details at this time, the organization of the group is actively in the works and a space is nearly secured. Paul is asking for those living in northern Manhattan to contact him if they are interested in sitting with the group. You can reach Paul by emailing pbrantley (at) mac (dot) com.

Thank you, Paul, for all of your efforts! We are very much looking forward to the dharma’s further unfolding in northern Manhattan.

Reb Anderson was ordained as priest by Suzuki Roshi in 1970 and is a former abbot of the San Francisco Zen Center. He currently resides at Green Gulch Farm, where he is a senior dharma teacher. The theme of the retreat, which was held at the Kearns Spirituality Center in Pittsburgh, was “The Perfect Wisdom and Compassion of the Bodhisattvas.” Along with the Brooklyn crew, several other sanghas were represented there. From what I’ve heard, everybody had a great experience.
Paul was a student of Suzuki Roshi and was ordained by him in 1970. Just before he died, Suzuki Roshi encouraged Paul to travel to Japan to study traditional temple building. When he returned to the States five years later, Paul helped design and build many of the structures at Tassajara (including the current zendo) and Green Gulch Farm.

I found it interesting how Paul was able to implement the traditional building methods that he had learned – some of them several centuries old – using modern and locally available materials, not to mention the ingenious way he was often forced to adapt these practices to conform to modern building codes.
