News from Sōshinji 宗心寺, Ancestral Heart Zen Monastery

On June 10, 2019, we became stewards of fourteen acres of land in Millerton, NY, where we are together working to bring Sōshinji 宗心寺Ancestral Heart Zen Monasteryinto being.

We are exceedingly fortunate to be able to practice together with the land, our ancestors, and all living beings in the beautiful Hudson River valley where silence and activity exist in marvelous balance. We welcome, want, and affirm all who come here in search of freedom from habits that cause suffering and who will work toward cultivating compassion for all, across our many differences. If you are interested in applying for a weekend visit or for a short-term or long-term residence, please fill out the respective application and send it to ahzmdirector@brooklynzen.org.

Jukai Ceremony at BZC

On October 13, at the end of a three-day sesshin at Brooklyn Zen Center, several members of our sangha formally received and acknowledged the sixteen bodhisattva precepts in a ceremony called Jukai.

The ceremony was the culmination of an engaged period of study and practice with the bodhisattva precepts, during which the ordinands sewed their rakusus, the small Buddha robe worn by lay practitioners and priests.

During the ceremony, teachers and sangha members, as well as family and friends, gathered to support them and witness their vows.

Working with Collective Self and Collective Karma in Sangha (part 2), by Greg Snyder (03/17/2019)

Audio dharma talk by Laura O’Loughlin

You can listen to a new dharma talk by Laura O’Loughlin, dharma teacher and senior lay practitioner at Brooklyn Zen Center (BZC), as well as its co-founder.

On Wednesday night we had our full moon ceremony. It’s a way for us to feel ourselves as energetic bodies, connecting to something beyond our individuality. In this full moon ceremony we renounce our karma, we confess our karma and we wish for ourselves to live in alignment with the precepts, with a way of being with each other that offers a chance for us to be healing influences in the world, as opposed to harming influences.

Joining the 2019 Fall Practice Period: Commitment Form

Dearest sangha,

Each fall we look forward to the gathering together in a practice period as our sangha focuses on deepening intimacy with our practice and each other. The focus of our 7th practice period will be “Bodhisattva Service: Actualizing Self and Sangha.” We are excited to invite a Shuso (head student) to take a seat next to the teachers and encourage us in our practice.

Through our formal practice together we will continue to realize the truth of our interconnection as we endeavor to deeply and skillfully love and care for ourselves, our shared lives, all beings and our Mother Earth. In Soto Zen, we enact this Bodhisattva vow through zazen, study and being of service to each other and to the wider world.

The practice period form outlines the many offerings that will support our practice period. The beauty of our collective practice is that sangha both creates and receives these offerings. In fact, the practice period can only be created, nourished and sustained by each person’s participation. By filling out the practice period form we clarify how all of us will be supporting each other and our own practice. We encourage you to be part of this precious time when we together devote our efforts to cultivating the Bodhisattva way of life.

Please fill out and submit the 2019 fall Practice Period form by September 11th.

With love and appreciation,
Laura and Kosen

New Beginner’s Mind Experience group!

The Beginner’s Mind Experience (BME) is a program that introduces newcomers to the various aspects of community practice at the Brooklyn Zen Center. The next BME program starts on Monday, September 30!

As part of this program, participants have the opportunity to join a peer practice group, try practice discussion, experience various forms of wholehearted activity practice, and, if you are a BZC member, receive special rates on two introductory classes (valid for one year): Introduction to Zen Buddhism (starting September 24!) and Meditation in Everyday Life.

There are two ways to take part in the Beginner’s Mind Experience:

– Members of BZC can join the program for free. You can become a member here. To register for BME as a BZC member please go here.

– Non-members can join the program for a fee of $100. To register to BME as a non-member please go here. Scholarships are available. To apply for a scholarship, please use this link and wait for approval BEFORE registering. Scholarship applications are due by Monday, September 23 at midnight.

The registration deadline for the Fall 2019 BME program is Friday, September 27 at midnight.

The program provides members with a sense of the variety and intimacy of zen practice in the BZC community and also offer embodied experience with how we can engage these practices in our daily lives.
