Buddha’s awakening: community circle, ceremony and potluck, December 8

Event Details

  • Date:

On this special Saturday, we will gather together to celebrate Buddha’s awakening in a mahasanhga-wide Community Circle, ceremony and potluck.

During this gathering, all will be offered support and space to share their voice and presence, if they wish to do so. We hope you can join us as we sit and share in a circle and hold each other in this special way.

Following our circle, we will commemorate the awakening of Shakyamuni Buddha under the Bodhi tree with the traditional Soto Zen ceremonial incense offering and the chanting of the Heart Sutra in Japanese while circumambulating the zendo to the rhythm of the Taiko drum, while strewing flowers and seasonal greens in joyful celebration.

Our gathering will also include a potluck, for which all are invited to contribute. Friends and family are welcome to join as well! To help us coordinate the food offerings for the potluck, please let us know if you will be making a contribution here by December 5. Please note that, due to the scheduled electricity cut off (see below), food items should need neither refrigeration or heating.

The Saturday morning program will begin as usual at 10:05 a.m. with the Han, calling us in for a period of zazen. We encourage you to arrive before 10:20 a.m. to join in the sitting meditation. The Community Circle will follow zazen. Buddha’s Enlightenment ceremony will start at 12pm, with the potluck to follow, beginning approximately at 12:30pm.

Please note that the electricity will be turned off on Saturday, from 7am-3pm, due to Con Ed street work on Carroll Street, affecting the entire building where BZC is located. Therefore, we will be without heat, light and audio. Please bear with us and dress for a potentially less warmer zendo.

We hope you can join us in this special gathering at BZC!
