Description

Four-week class: Wednesdays, January 24 and 31, February 7 and 14
7:00—8:30pm EST

Our enculturation and many layers of conditioning often cut us off from a sense of embodiment. Our way of being and moving is often so habituated that our awareness is deadened; we cannot tune in to the more subtle sensations and experiences of each moment. The Alexander Technique offers a roadmap for embodiment. It is a method that keys into the body’s natural way of being upright and open. By bringing Alexander Technique principles and mindfulness to yoga postures, we can experience ourselves in new ways without the accumulated baggage that we bring to our everyday movements. Yoga poses awaken and enliven the body for meditation. We will then transfer these practices to seated and walking meditation and everyday movement.

These classes will use restorative and fundamental yoga postures to:
• Organize the head-neck-back relationship
• Free hips to feet
• Open the shoulders & relax the arms
• Help you find your ideal sitting position
• Open and prepare the body to sit meditation
• Release problem areas & recover from sesshin

Please bring your own yoga mat; there will also be mats available if needed.

You may sign up for all four classes or register for single classes at the ‘drop-in’ rate.

Equitable Pricing Model

BZC is committed to offering classes, workshops, and retreats on a sliding scale in an aspiration to move towards equity within our sangha. To that end, we offer an equitable pricing model as a mindfulness practice and a mirror of our relations to histories of wealth. Please see the Equitable Pricing Model to determine your registration rate level.

If you’re unable to pay at the lowest rate, please use this form to apply for an exemption.

Instructor

Kristen Davis has been teaching yoga and Alexander Technique since 1995. She is also a committed practitioner of Soto Zen Buddhism and a long time member of Brooklyn Zen Center, where she currently serves in the role of ino. For 14 years, Kristen was the owner and director of Yogasana Center in Brooklyn, NY. Beyond her original 1600 hour Alexander Technique training, she completed a post-graduate training in the Art of Breathing with Jessica Wolf in 2006. Her yoga studies have been predominantly in the Iyengar tradition, most importantly with her teacher and mentor, Donald Moyer. Kristen has been regularly leading Yoga and Alexander Technique retreats at both Tassajara Zen Mountain Monastery and Green Gulch Farm Zen Center since 2016. She is thrilled to be able to share her passion for embodied practice with her own beloved sangha at BZC.
