Brooklyn Zen Center is a community rooted in Soto Zen practice, teachings, rituals, and ceremonies — held together by mutual care, and open to anyone who walks through our doors. Membership is how you say: I am part of this. I am helping to hold this.
By becoming a member at BZC, you are laying the foundation that supports our programs and operations. It is dana — generosity — that nourishes our sangha: making the dharma accessible to all, sustaining our collective practice, and supporting how we show up for the suffering in our world and in ourselves.
Membership is a monthly dana contribution. We ask you to give according to your capacity. The amounts are not tiers of belonging — they are an invitation to reflect on what you can genuinely offer.
In our tradition, 108 is a sacred number — the totality of existence, cosmic, physical, psychological, spiritual. It is said there are 108 afflictions that cause suffering, which our practice invites us to meet with patience and compassion — the same number of beads on a traditional mala, each one an act of devotion. To give at the level of 108, or a fraction or multiple of it, is to root your generosity in that same sense of connection.
Or please give an amount that feels right to you. We want you here.
