Week 01: Fundraising Tip – Start with your “Why”

Fundraising starts not with a pitch, but with presence. Begin with people, begin with care. (Photo: JessXSnow)

Peer-to-peer fundraising isn’t about asking everyone for everything. It’s about inviting people into something meaningful with you. It starts with clarity, connection, and care. Here are a couple of first steps to help you begin participating in BZC’s Peer-to-Peer Fundraiser:

Step 1: Ground in Your “Why”

Before you set up your page or send any messages, take a moment to reflect. This is your chance to offer a personal doorway into the shared space of practice and care that is Brooklyn Zen Center.

Ask yourself:

  • What brought you to BZC?
  • What feels alive or essential about this space right now?
  • How is BZC meeting your needs or meeting the needs of this time?
  • Why do you want others to support BZC with you?

Let these reflections shape the short message you write on your fundraising page. Keep it real and in your voice. Think of it as a letter to a friend.

Step 2: Begin with People

Fundraising is relational. So start by making a list of people. Who are you already in relationship with?

Consider your three rings of connection:

  1. Close Circle
Friends and family who know and care about you.
  2. Guides & Supporters
People who have shaped or supported your life—teachers, mentors, even someone who once encouraged your practice.
  3. Wider Community
Acquaintances who might be interested—colleagues, neighbors, a barista you once spoke with about meditation at a café. Think about how you might tailor a personal message to each of them as an invitation.
