Jukai means “receiving the precepts”. It is a ceremony in which devoted sangha members will formally and publicly commit to living ethically, in observance of the 16 precepts, and for the benefit of all beings. It is an entry into the Buddhist lineage and marks formal entry as a lay Buddhist practitioner in the Soto Zen tradition. It is the culmination of months (or years) of working with a teacher and Jukai cohort, studying the precepts, and sewing a small Buddhist robe (rakasu).
Please join us, as this ceremony is a joyful occasion for the entire sangha. We witness and support these practitioners taking this meaningful step on their path. When someone receives the precepts, they strengthen the sangha as a whole—their commitment ripples outward, deepening our collective practice and our interconnection as a community.
All are welcome! Please plan to arrive between 1:30 PM and 1:45 PM.
Boundless Mind Temple is located in the Parish House of Christ Church Cobble Hill, next to 326 Clinton Street. Enter the driveway on Clinton, go past the scaffolding, and through the double doors. There are two flights of stairs leading to the center, located on the second floor. The closest subway stop is the F/G at Bergen Street.
