From June 17–July 25, 2025, all of you, all of us –sangha jewels – will host a peer-to-peer fundraising campaign for Brooklyn Zen Center. Join us for this digital version of takuhatsu, or alms rounds!

The focus of this year’s fundraising is Indra’s ever widening net of connection and support. Each one of us is a jewel at the intersection of life’s fibers, interwoven with and reflecting all of the other jewels.

It’s been a challenging time for our sangha, and we need spiritual encouragement and support. The reality is that in order to fortify our spiritual wing, we need to strengthen our financial wing. It has long been the tradition of Buddhist practitioners to take out the begging bowl and ask for donations. Funds from this campaign will support the continued life of our practice and community by covering essential operational needs as we reshape our future together.

In the past, our fundraising efforts have sprung from leadership, our senior students, ryo heads, jishas, teachers, and board. This year, we want to give gratitude to those people, past, present, and future whose efforts have carried our sangha thus far. We are inviting you,—especially those with fresh energy and capacity to lead this effort—to join our digital takuhatsu.

So, sangha jewels, come forward and shine! Create a fundraiser page. Introduce yourself. Share what Zen practice means to you. Share a meaningful moment of healing, words of encouragement, or an instance of realization—on the cushion, over tea, with the kids in childcare, at a march, in mutual aid work—wherever compassion takes shape. You might consider sharing a quote, a poem, or an image.

Then, make a call to action in your own words and invite your friends and family to donate!

The practice of generosity can inspire both those who give as well as those who receive. This is especially true during challenging moments such as this, as it reminds us all that we are always within a network of caring connection.

We know that asking for support can feel vulnerable—and you’re not alone in that. Throughout the campaign, we’ll offer encouragement, weekly tips, community support (Monday nights), and reminders to help you feel grounded and connected as you fundraise.
