Choosing to live as the precepts means choosing to live as an undivided heart.

Our Zen vow to live for the benefit of all beings is an awe-inspiring request that can sometimes feel out of reach — for ourselves, our communities and the world. Thankfully, our Buddhist ancestors passed down sixteen ethical teachings, the Bodhisattva precepts, that clarify how an aspiring Bodhisattva moves through the world.

The precepts realign us with our collective vows in every moment. Over time, we develop faith that each small, intentional action can positively affect life. Working with our collective karma transforms histories of harm into healing potential.

This class is required of all those wishing to receive the precepts from a teacher (jukai), and recommended for everyone in leadership roles at BZC. It’s also a wonderful way to deepen one’s connection to the rich tradition of Soto Zen.

This class includes reading, talks, and group discussion. We will study and practice the precepts through our lived experience and what unfolds between us. We will look at the precepts with a recognition of the intersections of individual, interpersonal, collective and ancestral perspectives. These intimate discussions will be firmly grounded in both our precept practice and BZC’s Community Agreements.

Registration is due September 16. Registrants will receive a zoom link for the class.

Requests for pricing exemptions are due September 10. More information below.
